Statement of Purpose

A Statement of Purpose is an important opportunity to explain why you are passionate about becoming a teacher. It is a personal statement about who you are, what has influenced your career path and how it led you to teaching.

  • Why do you want to become a teacher?
  • Why are you interested in this particular program (i.e. residency model or mentor support) as a way to become an educator in an urban or rural environment?

Please answer both of the following questions on the same document with one or two paragraphs per question (250-400 words each). Upload the document below.

1. Successful teachers are lifelong learners - - they look for ways to learn and grow from feedback, failure, setbacks, and challenges. Please share an example of a time in which you experienced a failure or faced a significant setback. How did you approach the situation, and what did you learn from it?

2. Describe and reflect upon a significant experience you have had interacting with people who come from backgrounds different from your own (i.e. racially, ethnically, socio-economically, religiously, culturally, etc.) What did you learn from this experience? How will you use this experience to ensure high academic achievement for ALL students with diverse backgrounds and needs?
