How do we design and facilitate effective workshops that engage all learners?

This interactive online course is designed for educators at all levels ready to explore workshop model instruction as a structure for learners’ engagement and understanding. We will examine how this cornerstone of the PEBC Teaching Framework works, and consider how to design and facilitate each component of an effective workshop, regardless of grade level or content area. Course experiences  will include reading professional texts, watching classroom videos, hearing teacher interviews, applying and reflecting on your learning. 

Learning Targets

  • Participants will understand the beliefs and research that support workshop model instruction. 
  • Participants will practice the design of each component of a workshop. 
  • Participants will learn how to facilitate effective workshops.


  • Certificate upon completion of course (30 PD credit hours)
  • Downloadable course-related reading materials, excerpts of classroom videos, and course handouts

Course Overview

This course is organized into six modules; each module includes a welcome, some interactive direct instruction, choice readings, media and invitations to respond, class discussions, as well as an application task designed to help you bring workshop to life for your students. Your facilitators will respond to your work on the online learning management system, there to push your thinking and cheer you on.

  1. Purpose: Why workshop? 
  2. Structure: How do we design effective workshops?
  3. Worthy Work: In what ways will we invite learners to grapple, create and demonstrate understanding?
  4. Mini-lessons: What do I need to do to set learners up for successful independence?
  5. Work Time: How do we foster agency and understanding during work time?
  6. Reflection: In what ways might we invite learners to reflect on their understanding?

We encourage all participants to register with one or more colleagues to provide the greatest learning opportunity for your team.
