How can we design and facilitate engaged, accountable conversations about thinking and understanding?
This interactive online course is designed for educators at all levels keen to design and facilitate learning-focused conversations with and among students. Across twelve weeks, we will explore the value of discourse for learners’ language, social and academic development, the design and facilitation of discourse, as well as offer some structures and tools for classroom implementation - whether in person or remotely. Course content will include reading of professional texts, classroom videos, teacher interviews, application tasks and opportunities for reflection.
• Why is discourse beneficial?
• In what ways can we prepare learners for engagement in discourse?
• What structures can be implemented to support effective student to student talk?
• How can teachers facilitate productive discourse?
This course is organized into six modules; each module includes a welcome, some interactive direct instruction, choice readings, media and invitations to respond, class discussions, as well as an application task designed bring this practice to life in your instruction. Your facilitators will regularly respond to your work on the online learning management system, there to push your thinking and cheer you on.
