PEBC offers a full suite of professional development services in literacy and instruction. You can choose our comprehensive program for your school or district, or you can select from one or more of the services outlined below.
Comprehensive Literacy & Instruction Program
PEBC staff developers work in collaboration with teachers and school administrators to create comprehensive, site-specific professional development offerings to help meet their school improvement goals. This work begins by establishing an onsite leadership team charged with managing and nurturing the long-term change efforts. It continues with whole-staff professional development via study groups, demonstration lesson and lesson analysis, orientation lab experiences, curriculum design and planning. Individual teacher collaboration and small group collaboration is also an important part of this school-based work.
Individual Literacy & Instruction Services
- Instructional Coaching for Teachers
PEBC provides ongoing job-embedded professional development to teachers covering a wide range of classroom instruction strategies including developing rituals and routines to support student engagement and learning; teaching in all content areas to promote students’ thinking, reading, writing, and use of the comprehension strategies; planning curriculum based on clear learning objectives and standards; setting up workshop structures; conferring; differentiating instruction to meet diverse learners’ needs; using multiple forms of assessment to gauge students’ progress and determine next instructional steps; and developing the habits of reflective teaching. - Internal “Peer Learning” Labs
PEBC helps schools and districts set up internal “peer learning” labs where teachers observe each others’ practice and discuss best practices in instruction. Most internal labs are developed in schools where teachers have already been trained in the type of instruction PEBC supports. These teachers then open their classrooms to share their expertise with colleagues. - Lab Classroom Network and Instructional Labs
PEBC offers teams of teachers and principals the opportunity to spend four days observing research-based instruction by exemplary teachers in their own classrooms. The pre- and post-briefings, enriched by professional reading and written reflection, deepen the learning experience for network participants.
In addition, PEBC helps schools and districts implement their own best-practices lab, where teachers study instructional practices that promote students’ deep understanding of content and development of literacy skills. Groups of teachers (either within one content area or across areas) observe a highly effective secondary teacher, followed by structured debrief conversations to discuss implications for their own practice. - Tier 2 Lab
Tier 2 Lab is a lab experience designed to develop teacher leaders. PEBC works with a select cadre of teachers across the Denver metro area: those who already have strong instructional practices and are now ready to take a stronger role in the ongoing professional development efforts at their schools. In this lab experience, teachers continue to hone their own instructional practice, but also learn specifically how to talk about their teaching and how to support other adult learners. By mastering adult learning theory, these teachers are able to not only to support the learning of colleagues in their building but to support long-lasting school reform as well. Tier 2 participants acquire skills as in-house staff developers and are encouraged to host classroom/school visitors. Tier 2 participants then have the opportunity to become members of PEBC’s lab classroom roster. - Special Topic Labs
New this year, PEBC is offering two-day Special Topic Labs in the classrooms of nationally recognized Lab Hosts. The topics are areas of pressing need for many teachers – topics which these Lab Hosts have been exploring in light of current research and in response to district and state initiatives. Principals need to balance their organizational and instructional skills in increasingly complex environments. PEBC works with principals to help them identify and understand best instructional practices in the classroom, to use data in evaluating student performance, and to motivate and retain the highest quality workforce. - Institutes and Seminars
