Let’s face it: Mathematics learning requires tremendous literacy ability. Learn how to integrate literacy instruction authentically into mathematics content to support student understanding. We’ll discuss how to efficiently and effectively layer intentional disciplinary literacy instruction into your already fine math teaching. Learn concrete ideas for incorporating reading, writing, speaking, listening, and vocabulary learning in authentic ways into the weekly rhythm of your math courses.
In this lab, we will visit two secondary classrooms with a focus on teaching and implementing authentic classroom discourse and writing tasks. Participants will observe instructional practice, and discuss how to transfer the practices explored into their own classrooms.
This lab will be facilitated by Author and PEBC Sr. Director Wendy Ward Hoffer with visits to Preston Middle School in Fort Collins and Smokey Hill High School in Metro Denver.
Based on Wendy Ward Hoffer’s book Developing Literate Mathematicians.
